Image
After winning the Nobel Prize in 1979, Dr. Abdul Salam requested the Indian government to find Prof. Anilendra Ganguly, who had taught mathematics to Dr. Abdul Salam at Sanatan Dharma College, Lahore before the partition. He had to wait for two years to meet his teacher - finally in 1981 he had the opportunity to go to India and meet Prof. Ganguly who had settled in Calcutta after the partition - Prof. Ganguly had become very weak and had to get out of bed. Dr. Abdul Salam presented his Nobel Prize to Prof. Ganguly and said, "Sir, I have received this award because you taught me mathematics and instilled a love of mathematics in my heart." Presenting the Nobel Prize, he said For a teacher to say that a student was tantamount to breaking all the barriers that existed between the two countries and religions after the partition of India - it was a devotion by a student to a teacher that was much higher than the country's borders.
